Volleyball Closes Undefeated Season

October 20, 2018

On Friday evening the volleyball team closed the regular season with an emphatic 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-11) victory over Kew-Forest to improve to 10-0 on the season and 8-0 in the PSAA East Division. It was their seventh sweep in eight league games this season. It is also the first time a Stony Brook team has engineered consecutive undefeated league seasons since the girls’ cross country team accomplished the feat in 2012 and 2013.

The Bears started off slowly in game one, falling behind 1-3, but a Bekah Detwiler kill, bookended by a pair of kills from Ava McCormick, gave the Brook a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish. The Bears led 13-10 before closing the game on a 12-1 run, punctuated by three aces from Leslie Kang, and two kills apiece from Detwiler and McCormick. Liz Robbins closed out the game one win with two aces over the final three points.

In game two the Bears and Jaguars were locked at 4-4 before the Brook unleashed a 21-6 run to build a 2-0 lead in the match. A Sydnie Beausoleil kill ignited the run, Mercedes Alvarez added four kills, and Detwiler notched two kills and an ace.

In game three, the Bears built at early 8-1 lead behind three Alvarez aces and extended the lead to 19-8 after an Arden Madden ace and kills from Alvarez and McCormick. A Niamh Scanlon ace pushed the Jaguars to the brink at 23-11 and two Beausoleil kills fittingly closed the 25-11 win. Beausoleil finished her senior night with 7 kills and 3 aces while McCormick added 5 kills.

The Bears earned the #1 seed in the east by virtue of their undefeated record and will face the West Division’s 4th seed, Evangel Christian, at home on Monday in the first round of the PSAA playoffs.
