O’Haire and the ’95 U.S. Pan American team

On this day 31 years ago, Jon O’Haire ’77 and the United States Men’s Field Hockey team earned the bronze medal at the 10th Pan American Games with a 3-2 win over Chile.

The Americans went 3-1 in group play, behind only the eventual gold medal-winning Canadian squad and ahead of Bermuda, Jamaica, and Mexico. Their second place finish in the group stage earned them a spot in the semifinals where they fell to an Argentina team that went on to take the silver.

In the consolation match, they dispatched Chile to win America’s first medal in field hockey since a bronze in 1967 and one of 83 bronze medals won by the Americans as part of their 370 total medals at the ’87 Games. Cuba was second in the medal count with 175. The medal was also one of three consecutive bronze medals for the Americans along with third place finishes in 1991 and 1995. O’Haire was also a member of the 1995 squad.
