This afternoon, the badminton teams picked up key victories over Miller Place with just two matches left in the regular season. The girls avenged a 4-5 loss to the Panthers earlier this season with a resounding 9-0 sweep while the boys won 6-3 for their fourth win in a row vs. Miller Place.
The girls dominated, dropping just one game out of 19 in their nine matches as Mary Wang (11-4, 11-1), Masha Volovaya (11-4, 11-2), Judy Liu (11-8, 11-4), Elena Chen (11-1, 11-0), and Nancy Man (11-3, 11-1) handily won their singles matches, while Melody Li and Leslie Kang (15-9, 15-9), Sophie Cai and Ariel Wang (15-11, 15-4), Rosemary Wu and Grace Wang (15-5, 3-15, 15-8), and Margo Averbach and Candy Zhou (15-12, 15-10) swept their doubles matches. With the win, the Bears improved to 9-5 overall, a program wins record, and 5-3 in League II to remain in 2nd place.
The boys took four of the five singles matches behind strong performances from Jerry Liu (15-10, 15-5), Kevin Zhang (15-9, 10-15, 15-10), Ulysses Zhang (15-3, 15-13), and David Wang (11-15, 15-1, 15-10), while Jack Yu and Caleb Spreckels (15-4, 15-7) and Sam Han and Sam Wong (15-4, 15-7) closed out the victory at doubles. The win bumps the Bears’ overall record to 10-3 overall, one away from tying the program record for wins, and 6-1 in League II to remain in sole possession of 1st place.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday in a home match-up with Walt Whitman.
