The ’88 Stony Brook Baseball squad
On this day 30 years ago, the baseball team topped Hampton Bays, 7-6, in walk-off fashion.
The Bears held a 3-1 lead after three innings, but a five-run outburst in the top of the 4th gave the Baymen a 6-3 edge. The Brook chipped away with a run in the 5th, but still trailed 4-6 as the game headed to the last of the 7th.
Jordan Nixon led off with a walk and Mark Very reached base on an error by the first baseman. Cameron Thiessen followed with an RBI single and Doug Alioth knotted the game with an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
The game moved to the 8th where Martyn Crighton led off the inning on the receiving end of a hit by pitch. A fielder’s choice exchanged Glenn Rustay for Crighton before Nixon strode to the plate with two outs. The future Stony Brook School and Augustana College Hall of Famer struck a triple to score Rustay and give the Brook the win.
Alioth was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs while Very picked up the win and added a solo home run.
