This afternoon, the boys’ tennis team improved to 7-3 on the season and 5-2 in league play with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Bayport-Blue Point to retain sole possession of 2nd place in League V.
Brandon Gicquel (6-1, 6-0), Steven Ou (6-0, 6-0), and Wensan Yin (6-4, 6-0) each won their singles matches, but the Phantoms swept doubles to knot the match at 3-3. The result came down to Bradley Choi’s fourth singles match which headed to a third set after he split the first two, 6-3, 2-6.
Choi earned a break in game one, but failed to hold serve in game two. He broke his opponent in game three, then held serve for a 3-1 edge. His third break of the set gave him a commanding 4-1 lead, but he failed to hold serve in game six as his Phantom opponent pulled to within 2-4. With the match on the line, Choi fought off the pressure and the encroaching cold to earn a fourth break and seize the momentum back. He held serve in his next game to win the set, 6-2, and give the Brook the victory.
The Bears are back in action on Friday in a league match-up at Mt. Sinai.
