Badminton Quells Patriots

Yesterday afternoon, the badminton teams opened their seasons with 8-1 victories over Ward Melville in a mandatory non-league match-up.

The Bears, now in their fourth year of existence as a program, handed the fledgling Patriots losses in their first matches as a program.

On the girls’ side, Mary Wang (11-0, 11-2), Judy Liu (11-1, 11-0), Elena Chen (11-0, 11-2), Ariel Wang (11-5, 11-0), and Nancy Man (11-5, 11-3) swept the singles matches while the tandems of Melody Li and Leslie Kang (15-7, 15-3), Rosemary Wu and Grace Wang (15-2, 15-14), and Candy Zhou and Allison Barrientos (15-14, 15-1) won three of the four doubles matches to seal the win.

For the boys, Jerry Liu (15-1, 15-1), Tony Yu (15-7, 15-6), Kevin Zhang (15-4, 15-6), Ulysses Zhang (15-5, 15-8), and David Wang (15-3, 15-2) swept the singles matches while Jack Yu and Caleb Spreckels (15-4, 15-1), Sam Han and Sam Wong (15-8, 15-9), and Ben Sray and Bob Wu (15-8, 15-5) teamed up to win three of the four doubles matches.

In a dominant win, the Bears won a combined 33 of the 37 individual sets played. They take the court again on Thursday in a match-up at Half Hollow Hills.
