On Tuesday evening at the girls’ basketball coaches meeting, Beth Felix was named the co-MVP of League VII, along with Mattituck’s Liz Dwyer.
The junior guard finished the regular season ranked 8th on the Suffolk County scoring list at 21.1 points per game, ahead of Dwyer’s 18.9. Her 57 three-pointers led Long Island. She topped 30 points on three occasions with a high of 33 in a 48-55 setback at Mercy. She scored her 1,000th career point midway through the season and was recently named the Section XI Athlete of the Week. Felix also led the Bears to a 6-8 record in a tough, mixed-classification league, a mark strong enough for inclusion in the playoffs on an appeal.
The seeding committee’s faith in allowing the Bears into the playoffs was rewarded by the Bears’ 47-44 upset victory over second-seeded Pierson last night. Felix scored 24 points and knocked down three 3-pointers, including one with 1:31 left that halved a six-point deficit and paved the way for a thrilling comeback. The win puts the Bears back in the County Championship for the first time since 2013.
