On this day 13 years ago, the boys’ basketball team topped Greenport in overtime, 39-28, to clinch at least a share of the League VIII Championship.
In a low-scoring affair that saw neither team notch double-digits in any quarter, the Bears fell behind 6-2 after the first. They still trailed 10-13 at the half and 17-21 entering the fourth, but three 3-pointers in the final frame courtesy of Mitch Singer (2) and Jason Webster put the Brook in a position to win. Instead, Greenport’s Ryan Creighton connected on a 1-of-2 free throws with seven seconds left to knot the score at 26-26 at the end of regulation.
The Bears finally came alive in the four-minute extra period, blitzing the Porters 13-2 behind five points from Mike Hickey and another 3-pointer from Singer. Singer finished with a game-high 13 points while Hickey (8), Webster (6), Isom Chapelle (6), Peter Carmel (3), and Matt Rooney (3) rounded out the scoring. The Bear defense, a calling card of the 2004-05 team, limited Creighton to just seven points in each meeting that season. He would go on to become the second-leading scorer in New York State history.
The Bears would go on to clinch the outright League Championship in their season finale, a 60-55 overtime win over Mercy that sealed their 12-2 record.
