Womack 1971 Basketball

Womack goes up for two vs. Henley in 1971

On this day 46 years ago, the boys’ basketball team defeated St. Paul’s, 65-59. Here is the recap from Newsday:

Stony Brook Is Victorious

Garden City–In a different kind of see-saw battle–one in which the winners’ lead fluctuated from 20 to two points–the Stony Brook School defeated St. Paul’s, 65-59, in basketball yesterday.

The teams played evenly for the first quarter. Then Stony Brook took off in a 26-11 second period, when Drake Womack, Larry Jackson and Kelvin Spooner got hot. St. Paul’s came back slowly but surely in the second half, until Vince Mancusi’s 25-foot jump shot cut the lead to a mere two points, 59-57. A couple of ballhandling mistakes, however, gave Stony Brook breathing room in the final two minutes.

Womack finished with a game-high 29 points while Spooner and Jackson chipped in 14 and 12, respectively. Womack would close his senior year with 1,025 career points to become the first Brooker to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau.
