On this day 54 years ago, Robin Lingle ’60 set a Big Eight Conference record by winning the mile in 4:03.6 in a triangular meet with Arkansas and Iowa State at home in Columbia. The previous Big Eight mark was set 10 years earlier by Kansas’ Wes Santee in a time of 4:04.9. Lingle’s milestone also reset his own Brewer field house record of 4:06.2.
Lingle’s day was not done after his historic run. Later in the meet he helped the mile relay team break the Brewer field house record with a time of 3:22.2. The former Brooker powered the Tigers to a dominant performance as they won all but three events in racking up 91 points to top Arkansas (34) and Iowa State (26).
Lingle would go on to win two Big Eight Conference crowns that season in the 1,000 (2:11.7) and the mile (4:10.0).
