This evening, the boys’ basketball team leveled their League VII record at 3-3 in a 51-43 victory at Mercy. Similar to last year’s match-up, a 39-26 victory with a flu-depleted roster, the Bears led from start to finish. In fact, the last time the Monarchs held a lead against the Bears was a slim 10-8 margin on Dec. 2, 2015 in the Bears’ 78-60 win.

Jai Narain opened the scoring with a 3-pointer before Emil Vaughn extended the Bear lead to 9-5 with four straight points. Seamus Scanlon capped the quarter with a buzzer-beater to give the Brook a 13-9 edge.

The Bear lead swelled to as much as 14 in the second quarter as James Toney unleashed a 6-0 run over a span of 2:30 to give the Brook a 25-11 advantage, but the ever-scrappy Monarchs closed the half with six straight points to cut their deficit to eight at the break.

Scanlon and Toney sandwiched a Mercy bucket with scores to push the lead back to nine in the early moments of the third quarter, but Mercy reeled off seven straight points to pull within two at the 3:20 mark of the quarter. Owen Sobel responded with a bucket and Toney followed with a 3-pointer and a late basket to give the Brook a 36-30 lead entering the fourth.

Mercy opened the quarter with a score, but it was the closest they would get the rest of the way as the Bears seized control. Vaughn responded with a 3-pointer and Sobel connected on a pair of free throws to give the Bears a 41-32 advantage. After the Monarchs drained two free throws, Sobel scored the Bears’ next six points to push the lead back to nine with 1:49 remaining. The Monarchs would not threaten the rest of the way.

Sobel led the Bears with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Toney (13), Scanlon (9), Vaughn (9), Narain (5), and Andy D’Alessio (1) rounded out a balanced scoring attack.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday afternoon in a home rematch with Mercy.
