B Basketball 2001

The 2000-01 basketball squad

On this day 17 years ago, the boys’ basketball team edged Babylon, 50-49, after surviving the game’s final 19 frenetic seconds.

The Bears led 50-47 with 19 seconds left after Bobby Kiernan hit the front end of a 1-and-1. The Panthers responded with two free throws on their end to pull within a point, then stole the ensuing in-bounds pass and called timeout with seven seconds left.

With the game on the line, Rob Graziano stole the ball back and was fouled with just four seconds remaining. The senior missed both free throws then fouled a Babylon player on a rebound attempt with just one second remaining. Babylon’s Craig Condra missed the front end of a 1-and-1 as the Bears escaped with the win.

Sean Sprauve led the Brook with 18 points.
