On this day 39 years ago, three Brookers led the University of North Carolina to a tri-meet victory in the Tar Heels’ season opener at the Tin Can in Chapel Hill.
Don Lockerbie ’75 won the 1,000 yard run in 2:15.8 while Kevin Lockerbie ’77 and Mark Whitney ’78 joined forces with Wayne Tucker and Doug Slack to win the distance medley relay. The victories helped the Tar Heels accumulate 78 points to top South Carolina (33) and East Carolina (28).
Later that spring Don would run the 12th fastest 1,000 yard time in America (2:09.9) to qualify for the NCAA Championships while Kevin would finish runner-up in the 1,000 at the ACC Championships in 2:11.06.
