This afternoon, Jyles Etienne ’17 won the high jump at the Gladstein Invitational at Indiana’s home complex in Bloomington. It was his first competition since leaping 7′ 3″ in his first collegiate meet on December 8. Since that jump, which at the time placed him second in the nation, the Bahamian has been nursing a tender hamstring, keeping him out of the Hoosiers’ last two competitions.
Etienne was the last to enter today’s competition after skipping the first two heights at 6′ 2.25″ and 6′ 4.25″. He cleared 6′ 6.25″ on his first jump, then passed at 6′ 8″ to move on to 6′ 9.5″ with just two other jumpers. He cleared 6′ 9.5″ on his first attempt to win the competition before bowing out with three misses at 6′ 11″. In two competitions as a Hoosier Etienne has taken the crown in both.
Etienne’s 7′ 3″ remains 5th in the country and 1st in the Big Ten. He and the Hoosiers are back on the track on January 26 for the Indiana University Relays in Bloomington.
