On this day 17 years ago, the girls’ basketball team beat Greenport, 47-46, on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Michelle Spurlock.
The Bears trailed 44-48 with 35 seconds left when Laura Boyce knocked down a jumper to pull them within two. Greenport still led by two with just three seconds on the clock, needing only to inbound the ball to pull out the win. Instead, the Bears forced a five-second violation, setting up the fantastic finish. Spurlock, normally a dominant presence under the hoop, displayed her range by connecting on a 25-footer to steal the win and hand the Porters their first league loss.
Spurlock led the way with 19 points. Britt Weiner added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
