On this day 37 years ago, Jerry Britton ’76 led C. W. Post to an 88-69 victory over Stony Brook University.
The 6′ 3″ former Brooker, despite being undersized by Stony Brook’s bigs, grabbed 15 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass, and led all scorers with 21 points to help the Pioneers improve to 4-1 in the Big Apple Conference.
Stony Brook knotted the contest at 39-39 on a jumper with 19:41 left in the game, but Britton’s offensive rebound and putback gave Post a lead they would not relinquish. He grabbed another offensive board and finished the putback at the 10:35 mark, pushing the Pioneer lead to 63-50 on the way to the convincing win.
After the game Britton told Newsday:
People see how small we are and figure, 'Heck, we can intimidate those guys.' But we fool them. We play good defense and we can jump. We feel good about ourselves.
