On this day 5 years ago, the girls’ basketball team edged Pierson, 28-25, in Sag Harbor. Here is the recap of the game from Cailin Riley of the East Hampton Press:

Like their male counterparts, the Lady Whalers also suffered a close loss to Stony Brook. Pierson was downed, 28-25, at home against Stony Brook on January 15. The loss moved Pierson to 4-3 in League VIII, 6-7 overall. The Lady Whalers needed two more wins to clinch a playoff spot in Class C.

Against Stony Brook, shooting woes hurt the Lady Whalers, who managed just 10 first half points.

“We got plenty of shots, but we just couldn’t hit anything,” head coach Kevin Barron said. “It wasn’t like we were turning the ball over, it was just that nothing was going in for us that night. It was basically the only thing that was wrong. The defense was great and our ball movement was decent, but we couldn’t get the ball to go in.”

Barron said he believes his team can beat Stony Brook, and the players will get a chance to prove their coach right in the regular season finale on February 8. Barron said that Stony Brook (5-1 in league) has been a “surprise” team, but has succeeded mainly because it has two very tall players in the frontcourt in Ariana Odom and Keara Vancol. Odom led all scorers with 14 points in the win over Pierson. Nine different players scored for Pierson in the loss, but the highest scorers had only four points.

“They have two very tall girls who grab a lot of rebounds and it’s tough to get offensive rebounds against them,” Barron said. “If you don’t score on the first opportunity down the court, that’s it. I thought we’d be able to beat them with our speed, which we did a good job of, but the shots weren’t falling.”

Pierson would not beat the Bears in the rematch as the Brook prevailed in another close one, 35-32, to claim the League Championship. One week later, the Bears pounded the Whalers in the Class C semifinals, 40-22. They went on to top Southold in the championship, 56-39.
