The 1940-41 cagers
On this day 77 years ago the boys’ basketball team topped the Hofstra College freshman team, 32-24 (they later became Hofstra University in 1963).
Here is the recap from Res Gestae 1941:
The Stony Brook cagers left for Hofstra half expecting to receive a beating at the hands of the older and more experienced Hofstra Freshmen, but instead came home holding the top end of a 32-24 game. [John] Deahl again led the scoring with 13 points to his credit, closely followed by [Arthur] Adamsen with 10.
The clocklike precision with the excellent ball-handling of the Ruffner quintet proved to be more than a match for the Freshmen and the powerful Blue and White aggregation again brought home the bacon.
The 1940-41 team would go on to finish 11-4 and bring coach Charles Ruffner’s win total to a then-program record 151 in his 15th season.
