Defense Powers Bears in Opener

December 4, 2017

The girls’ basketball team opened the season on Friday night with a 43-28 league victory over Center Moriches. The win ended a four-game losing skid to the Red Devils who the girls last beat on Dec. 12, 2009, 50-43.

The Bears were in control from the opening tip, imposing a suffocating defense that led to plenty of opportunities to attack in the transition. Danielle Graves scored the first bucket of the season to give the Bears an early lead. Beth Felix dropped in a layup and Wura Obasanjo hit a jumper in the waning seconds to give the Brook a 9-6 edge after the 1st quarter.

The offense caught fire in the second frame, unleashing a 12-0 run that left the Bears up 21-6 with under two minutes left in the half. Graves’ steal and jumper and Felix’s steal and bucket highlighted the spurt. The Blue and White defense, which grabbed four steals and in the opening frame and another three in the second, finally allowed the Devils their first field goal of the game with 1:33 remaining. A free throw and a late bucket gave Center a bit of momentum as they headed into the break trailing 12-22.

The Bears firmly seized control in the always important first four minutes of the 3rd quarter, using an 11-0 run to stretch their advantage to a comfortable 33-12. Felix scored nine points during the run, punctuated by a traditional three-point play on a tough, falling-down floater. Center scored their first points of the frame with 2:16 remaining to initiate a quick 5-0 spurt, but Jessica Nwachukwu’s hard fought bucket gave the Brook a 35-17 advantage heading into the fourth. The only drama was Felix’s foul trouble, as she picked up her fourth foul with two minutes left in the 3rd.

Felix continued to play well despite her precarious foul situation and opened the 4th with her 8th and final steal, taking it all the way in for a 37-17 lead. However, the Devils showed great resilience as they engineered an 11-2 run around a Niamh Scanlon jumper, closing the gap to 39-28, but they would get no closer.

Felix led all scorers with 19 while Graves added 9. Nwachukwu and Obasanjo were terrors underneath, battling for every rebound and limiting the number of Red Devil possessions.

The Bears continue their league slate today in a home match-up with Babylon.
