On this day 22 years ago, Dan Shanks ’92 scored 15 points as Coker College knocked off Western Carolina University, the Catamounts’ first loss to a Division II team in three years.

Shanks and the Cobras fell behind by 13 early, but cut their deficit to 31-36 at the half, only to see WCU push the lead back to 10 points with 15:22 remaining. At that critical juncture, Coker unleashed a 10-0 run to knot the game. The Cobras then grabbed their first lead at the 9:08 mark before the Catamounts surged ahead, 53-52. In the waning moments, Shanks came through with a bucket to put the Cobras up for good en route to a 60-53 upset on the road.

Shanks led the team to a #14 national ranking later that season.
