On this day 56 years ago, Tonnie Coane ’59 helped lead the Kansas University men’s cross country team to the Big 8 Conference title.
The Jayhawks took 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th to rack up just 26 points in a dominant showing over Oklahoma State (78), Colorado (78), Missouri (121), Kansas State (131), Oklahoma (147), Nebraska (153), and Iowa State (176). Coane took 7th overall on the three-mile Lawrence Country Club course in Kansas.
Kansas had won thirteen straight titles until Oklahoma ended their streak in 1960. Coane helped ensure the Jayhawks brought the title back home.
