On Saturday afternoon, the sail team took 2nd place in their league qualifier to earn a spot in the Fall Championship in Rochester against some of the finest sailors in the country.
The winds were fair out of the north, blowing 10 to 12 knots, but Captain Johnny Everitt felt that his team was prepared. In Division A, Thomas DeRose and Ella Simmons piloted their dingy to one 1st place finish. Later in the day Alysa Jette replaced Simmons and helped DeRose to two more 1st place finishes and two runner-ups. Their worst finish of the day’s eight races was 4th place as they finished with 27 points, good enough for 2nd in Division A.
In Division B, Matt Sparacio and Hannah DiLavore never finished outside the top six in their eight races and plied the Oyster Bay waters to three 1st place, two 2nd place finishes, and a 3rd place finish. Said Captain Everitt, “This team had some really impressive finishes including one where they finished almost a minute ahead of the next boat.” Sparacio and DiLavore took 2nd place in the division by a point.
The team’s combined scores from Divisions A and B gave them 49, good enough for 2nd overall behind Rye’s 34.
Captain Everitt praised the sailors who traveled to the regatta to lend their support to their teammates, despite not being scheduled to compete. He also lauded his coaching staff, comprised of Brian Elliot, Wally Henry, Leslie Paige, Brad Brummeler, and Dave Tampellini.
