Jose Rains, Bears Reign vs. Mercy

September 21, 2017

On Tuesday afternoon, while Tropical Storm Jose churned several hundred miles offshore, the boys’ soccer team conjured up a storm of their own in a 7-1 victory over Mercy.

Coming into the match the Bears were 4-0 all-time vs. the Monarchs with an aggregate score of 23-6. The last time the two squared off was on October 4, 2008, a 6-1 home victory for the Brook. The script remained unchanged as the Blue and White jumped on Mercy with an offensive barrage that saw them score 4 goals within the first seven minutes of the match.

Chris Swiatek opened the floodgates in the 3rd minute, finding the net after some beautiful work from freshman Mo Romeus on the left side of the box. Exactly four minutes later Jai Narain hustled down a water-logged shot attempt by Owen Sobel and passed the ball across the six-yard box to David Wadding who bulged a wide open net. Eleven seconds later, Narain did all the work himself, stealing the initial pass off of Mercy’s kickoff, nutmegging his defender, and blasting a shot from 20 yards that arced just out of reach of the keeper for a 3-0 lead. Narain scored again just over a minute later when Wadding returned the favor by heading a ball perfectly ahead of his teammate and Mercy’s back line. From there Narain buried it past the keeper, who had to come off his line to cut down the angle. After Mercy scored their only goal of the match, Sobel capped the first half cannonade when he took a throw in from Ian Blunt and maneuvered between three defenders before artfully chipping the ball over the keeper with 7:42 remaining.

Narain completed his hat trick six minutes into the second half when he turned a deft pass from Sobel into an 18-yard strike that found the left side netting. The skies opened up early in the half, prompting the officials to call the game with eighteen minutes remaining, but not before Gift Okwa headed in a corner kick from Ryan Eikenes for the final tally.

The Bears currently sit at 4-2 overall in the league. They travel to Southold on Wednesday afternoon for a rematch with the Settlers.
