Volleyball Sweeps Clippers in Opener

September 7, 2017

Yesterday afternoon the volleyball squad began the defense of their Suffolk County Championship in a 3-0 victory over Greenport/Southold. After their thrilling upset victory in last year’s county final, the anticipation for the first volleyball match was electric as the Blue Fan Group packed Swanson for a weekday afternoon game.

The girls treated the spirited crowd to a quick start as they built an 8-0 lead, largely on the serving of senior captain Sam Petersen. After the initial surge, the two squads played even ball to 18-10 as first match mistakes were evident on both sides. The Bears eventually pulled out game one, 25-14.

The Bears built a 14-6 edge in the second game, then further extended their lead to 22-11 before Leslie Kang served out the 25-11 game two victory. The Blue & White dominated game three, 25-8, to close out the sweep.

Sam Petersen led a strong serving contingent with 14 aces. Hannah Detwiler (4 aces), Liz Robbins (4), Danielle Graves (2), Lois Ezi (1), and Bri Kilkenny (1) provided the remaining aces. As a team the Bears placed an impressive 64 of 68 serves in bounds, keeping constant pressure on the Clippers.

The Bears are back in action this Saturday in a tournament at Kings Park.
