New York Takes Over Philly

May 1, 2017

This past weekend at the 123rd running of the Penn Relays, Jyles Etienne was part of a successful contingent of New York athletes, taking the bronze in the high jump. Here is an excerpt from MileSplit New York‘s recap.

The Empire State made their usual pilgrimage westward in the final weekend of April, to take on the best in the Tri-State, and beyond. Several athletes made their mark at the Penn Relays, signifying the start of the competitive season in New York.

A rivalry we’ll see many times this spring got kicked off in Philly this weekend. Dan Claxton (Smithtown East) was the Indoor State Champ, while Jyles Etienne (Stony Brook HS) took the Suffolk Outdoor Record earlier this season. The two met for the first time in 2017, and the results was… nearly a tie.

Both athletes ended up with 6-10.25, although Etienne got the edge. He took three attempts at 6-9, however it was Etienne who cleared 6-10.25 on the first attempt. With Claxton’s three attempts, Etienne would get the edge. Only Qayyim Ali of PA was a better placing American, taking the role of Champion of America that Etienne held last year. Byron-Bergen’s Brandon Burke moves to NY #3 as well.
