Continuing a Stony Brook track tradition that began in 1927, a group of Bears journeyed to Philadelphia on Friday to compete in the 123rd running of the Penn Relays.
Jyles Etienne took the bronze medal in an incredibly deep field of 22 jumpers with a leap of 6′ 10.25″, besting his silver medal winning height of 6′ 9″ from a year ago. In doing so he became the only Brooker to earn two individual Penn Relays medals in school history. Andy Whitney won the 2 mile in 1979 and Laura Whitney took the bronze in 1980’s 3000.
Etienne and Jamaica’s Lushane Wilson were the last two jumpers to enter the field, passing the 6′ 3.5″ and 6′ 5″ heights. Etienne cleared 6′ 6.75″ on his first attempt and then passed at 6′ 8″. He missed his first two attempts at 6′ 9″ but cleared it on his last attempt to move on to 6′ 10.25″ with only four other jumpers. He cleared the height on his first attempt and moved on to 6′ 11.5″ with three others before bowing out. In the first of several head-to-head match-ups this season, Etienne bested Smithtown East’s 7-foot jumper, Daniel Claxton, with less misses at the previous height to take the bronze.
