Bears Try Hand at Steeplechase

This afternoon, individuals from the boys’ and girls’ track teams ran at the Port Jeff Steeplefest invitational. The meet affords runners an opportunity to experience the steeplechase, a unique event that is only available at certain invitationals. The race course is comprised of four barriers (36″ high for boys, 30″ high for girls) followed by a water barrier that is approximately 12 feet long and decreases in depth the further it stretches from the barrier.

On the girls’ side, Miranda Harrigan finished in 12th place in the open 2000 in a time of 8:39. In the novice 2000, Sophia DiLavore took 27th in a field of 54 in 9:29, despite being the second-youngest runner in the field. Along with the steeple races, several field events were offered and Francine Leung took 13th in the long jump (14′ 4.5″) and 17th in the triple jump (28′ 2.25″).

The boys’ had a fine showing as well. In the freshman 2000, Riley Corcoran (13th/8:20) and Finn Rubman (30th/9:51) ran well in their first experience with the steeplechase. In the novice 2000, Louis Wang took 9th place in 7:29 while Pieter Van Zeijts earned a 17th place finish in the 51-man field in 7:51.
