Yesterday afternoon, the baseball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 13-6 win over Greenport. The Bears are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 1996 County Championship squad began the season 3-0 (we did not field a team from 2001-2006).

The Bears roared out of the gates with four 1st inning runs, ignited by patience at the plate. Seamus Scanlon led off with a walk, Aidan Mega was hit by a pitch, and Joe Wozny followed with a walk to load the bases. Tutuska drew a walk that plated Scanlon, then Emmanuel Ajewole pushed across Mega after being hit by a pitch. Nate Smith followed with a walk to score Wozny to extend the lead to 3-0. Dan Moreno hit into a fielder’s choice to chase home Tutuska and give the Brook a 4-0 lead after their half of the 1st, despite manufacturing no hits.

Tutuska registered three strikeouts in the bottom of the first, but the Porters plated two in the 2nd and three in the 3rd to take a brief 5-4 lead.

In the top of the 4th the Bears erupted for nine runs to surge into a 13-5 lead they would not relinquish. Scanlon reached to begin the inning on an error by the second baseman. Mega advanced Scanlon to second on a sacrifice and Wozny followed with a single. Tutuska was hit by a pitch to load the bases. On a sacrifice bunt attempt by Ajewole, an error by the catcher allowed Scanlon to tie the game while the bases stayed load.

A Nate Smith walk gave the Bears a 6-5 lead. David Choi went down swinging for the second out of the inning, giving the Porters a chance to escape relatively unscathed, but Moreno walked and Jack Derco was hit by a pitch, each forcing home a run to give the Brook an 8-5 edge. Scanlon then stepped into the box for his second at bat of the inning, roping a single to score Smith for a 9-5 lead. Then Mega broke the game open with a three-run double that extended the Bears’ advantage to 12-5. An error by the Porters’ shortstop allowed Wozny to reach safely and for Mega to score, capping the nine-run inning.

The Porters would tack on a run in the 5th, but Tutuska was nearly unhittable after the 3rd inning, allowing just one hit while at one point recording six straight outs. He finished with 10 strikeouts and four earned runs on just five hits. Wozny nailed down the win with three straight outs after a leadoff walk.

Mega led the way at the plate with 3 RBIs while Moreno notched two of his own. Scanlon was the table setter all day, scoring 3 runs for the Bears.

The weather looks wet over the next two days which will likely postpone the Bears’ Friday and Saturday match-ups with Greenport. Stay tuned.
