Rachel Crane has now written her name beside 3 school records (PC: Bruce Jeffrey)

For the second straight year a school record was left in the wake of a Bear performance at the Suffolk County Championships.

Last season, Rachel Crane broke her own record in the 100 backstroke, cutting through the water in a time of 1:02.98. On Saturday, two school records fell thanks to a group of five Brookers that came together to rewrite the marks in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Heading into the 200 medley relay the girls wanted to finish top 10 in the county and break the 2002 school record of 2:02.72 set by Lisa Cook ’05, Caitlin Kevins ’04, Amanda Shapiro ’04, and Victoria Fresolone ’03. Both of those goals would be a tall order considering the team’s best time all season was 2:05.61. Rachel Crane led off with a 29.94 backstroke and Yesenia McKee followed with a 36.12 breaststroke. Rebecca Crane swam 27.98 in the butterfly leg and Francine Leung anchored the team with a time of 27.60 in the freestyle. When the water had settled the clock read 2:01.64, giving the girls the school record! The mark also gave the Bears an 8th place finish ahead of massive schools like Harborfields, Smithtown, Lindenhurst, and Northport.

The 400 freestyle relay team also smashed their season’s best mark. Rebecca Crane, Josie Levy, Francine Leung, and Rachel Crane entered the event with a best time of 4:07.76. They stepped out of the water with a school record mark of 4:03.71, besting the previous time of 4:04.70 set in 2002 by Lisa Cook ’05, Caitlin Kevins ’04, Caitlin McQuilling ’03, and Amanda Shapiro ’04. Additionally, they placed 12th overall ahead of Harborfields, Central Islip, and Lindenhurst.

On the individual side, Rebecca Crane swam to a season best time of 25.96 in the 50 freestyle to place 15th out of 25. She also turned in her best time of the season in the 100 butterfly to earn a 12th place finish out of 29. Rachel Crane sliced her way to a 15th place finish out of 23 in the 100 backstroke and a 16th place finish out of 22 in the 200 individual medley.
