Last Friday, the cross country teams closed their team seasons with strong finishes, each taking second in Suffolk County’s Class D and sending two individuals on to the New York State Championships.
The girls were led by Miranda Harrigan who finished runner-up for the second straight season in a time of 21:21. In an aggregation of runners across all four classes, Harrigan’s time put her at 58th out of 237 runners. Cianka Haynes also qualified for the State Meet by finishing in 6th place in a time of 23:18, despite running on a sore ankle. Other scorers for the Bears included Danielle Sivertsen (11th/25:32), Meghan Hutzler (12th/25:59), and Judy Tao (13th/26:20). The Bears were missing two of their best runners in Anna Brummeler and Erika Kady, yet found enough to score 44 points to top Pierson (53 points) and gain a runner-up finish behind a powerful Shelter Island squad (27).
On the boys’ side Louis Wang, in his first year of cross country after switching over from soccer, finished in 6th place in a time of 19:11 to qualify for the State Meet. Justin Moreno will join him in Chenango Forks on Saturday after finishing 10th in 20:03. Other scorers for the Brook were Hyun Cho (14th/20:36), Josh Lin (16th/20:45), and seventh-grader Aidan Harrigan (19th/20:53). The boys also finished 2nd as a team with 65 points behind a Shelter Island squad that grabbed the first four spots and produced the low score of 19. However, they clipped league rivals Pierson (69) and Southold (71) to close the year with a great performance.
