On This Day In History | 2013

On this day three years ago, the cross country teams each took home their Suffolk County Championship at the famed Sunken Meadow State Park.

On the girls’ side, Margot Rashba took home her fourth consecutive individual crown, cruising to the win by over a minute in a time of 21:33. Her teammate, eighth-grader Clara Walker, was the runner-up in 22:40. Eighth-grader Miranda Harrigan (4th/23:49), freshman Anna Brummeler (7th/24:14), and junior Elsa Crozier (14th/27:16) rounded out the scoring for the Bears who won their fourth title in five years.

Fueled by the girls’ win, the boys set off to reclaim the title they had not held since 2010. Standing in their way was a Southold team who had clipped them 26-30 in early October. This time around the margin would be razor thin.

Southold’s top runner took 1st place, but Jacob Brummeler (2nd/18:52) and Ayan Mandal (3rd/18:57) finished close behind. Southold then pushed across the 4th place runner, leaving the squads tied with three scoring runners to go. After a Pierson runner came through in 5th place, Southold took a one-point edge when they grabbed 6th place ahead of our Luis Irias (7th/20:31). Simon Wynter came through next for the Brook (8th/20:32) ahead of Southold’s fourth runner, leaving the teams tied again with just one more scoring runner to go. Whichever team’s runner crossed the line next would win the title. Junior John Desan (10th/20:44) provided the dramatics by finishing ahead of Southold’s fifth runner to give the Brook a thrilling 27-28 win.
