The boys’ soccer team dispatched Mattituck on Tuesday afternoon, 4-1, in their first road game of the season to improve to 4-0 and claim sole possession of first place in League VII.

It was the first match-up in six years between the Bears and the Tuckers who last tangled on September 15, 2009. In that game Charlie Kwak struck the game-winner with five minutes remaining in double-overtime to steal the win against the blue and gold.

The Bears opened the scoring for the fourth time in as many games on Tuesday when Jai Narain struck for his fourth goal of the season just minutes into the match. The Brook further knocked the perennial Class B power back on its heels when Alvaro Martinez Torres tallied his seventh goal of the season, thanks to an assist from Gazie Moghalu. Nearing the halftime break, the Tuckers benefited from a controversial hand ball call near the box. They were awarded a penalty kick and made it count to halve their deficit at the midway point.

The Bears ensured the late goal did not swing the momentum by striking for two more goals in the second half. Scores from Gift Okwa (his first on the varsity) and Martinez Torres, with an assist from Thomas Lawton, gave the Bears a commanding 4-1 lead; however, the edge never felt comfortable as the Tuckers sent wave after wave of attack against the Blue and White defense. Mattituck launched over 20 shots at the goal, forcing an incredible 14 saves from David Choi who employed an array of dives and fingertip deflections to preserve the lead. His defensive core of Mac Bohuny, Bryant Kang, Ben DiRuggiero, and Caleb Spreckles were up to the task of shackling the prolific offense.

Martinez Torres, who has scored two goals in each of his first four games, is currently tied for 4th on the Suffolk County scoring list with 12 points (8 goals/4 assists).

The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon in a match-up with Smithtown Christian.
