What a way to end a losing streak.

The Stony Brook volleyball team had dropped its last 13 matches heading into yesterday’s match-up with Shelter Island, the 12-time defending Class D County Champions. The Bears had not beaten the Indians in their last 25 match-ups since last beating them on October 12, 2004 by a 3-0 margin. Stan Winston, who is back at the helm after six years, was the last coach to take down the islanders. The Bears, despite having a number of talented teams over the years, could never get past the Islanders. Until yesterday.

After taking the opening set, the Bears trailed 14-23 in set two when they won the serve back. The girls needed a furious rally and Elizabeth Robbins provided the spark, winning 10 service points in a row to give the Brook an improbable 25-23 victory.

Danielle Graves then began set three with 10 consecutive service points of her own to bury Shelter in an early deficit on the way to a sweep. During that stretch the Bears earned a remarkable 21 straight points against the islanders spanning the second and third sets. To put the victory into perspective, the three individual sets the Bears won yesterday equals the number of sets they won against Shelter Island in the last six years, a stretch of 14 matches.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon in a match-up at Mercy.
