Tomorrow morning at 11:00am, Jyles Etienne will compete in the high jump championship at the New Balance Outdoor Championships in Greensboro, NC. One year ago, Jyles jumped in the emerging elite category at the New Balance Nationals (one step down from the Championship level), finishing in 6th place with a then-school record jump of 6′ 5.5″. Our Bahamian skyscraper has long since left that meager height behind, and looks to test himself against the nation’s best.
Tomorrow’s event will feature 27 jumpers from 18 different states, including 10 state champions. The competition will open with a height of 6′ 4.25″ and will progress to 6′ 6.25″, 6′ 8.25″, 6′ 10.25″, 7′ 1.75″, and beyond. The meet record stands at 7′ 4.5″, set in 2000. Last year’s champion, Jaron Brooks out of Lexington, KY, is in the field and won the title in 2015 with a leap of 7′ 1.5″.
