Over the weekend, the New York State Sportswriters Association released their All-State team and three members of the boys’ basketball team made the list.
Seniors Chester Kayonga and Luke O’Connor and junior Jyles Etienne were each named All-State Honorable Mention after helping to lead the Bears to a fourth consecutive Suffolk County Championship and the first Long Island title since 2013.
Kayonga (12.7 ppg/3.1 apg/4.6 rpg/48 three-pointers) led the point for the Brook. Unflappable under pressure, he always came up with the big shot, including a key trifecta late in the county title. O’Connor (14.5 ppg/4.7 rpg/46 three-pointers) paced the Bears’ offense throughout the season with his silky left-handed shot and ability to drive and finish. Etienne (7.3 ppg/9.5 rpg/77 blocks) was a defensive juggernaut, defending the rim from would-be attackers all season long. In the County Final he recorded 7 fierce rejections that single-handedly kept Pierson from taking control of the game late in the third quarter.
