Last Wednesday was a historic day for Stony Brook Athletics as the boys’ badminton team earned their first win in program history with a 6-3 victory over Class AA Walt Whitman.
In a badminton match there are nine possible team points to be had between five singles matches and four doubles matches, played in a best 2-out-of-3 format. Bobby Chen, David Choi, Haban Weon, and Jerry Liu secured straight-set victories in our first four singles matches.
Three-set victories by our 1st doubles (Ulysses Zhang & and Tony Lu) and 2nd doubles (Sam Han & Sam Wong) tandems secured the victory for the Bears. Both doubles teams showed tremendous grit as their victories came after dropping the first set.
Tiger Sun (5th singles), Jack Yu and Leo Yang (3rd doubles), and Inpyo Ma and David Wang (4th doubles) each lost in the third set, so the rematch with the Wildcats looks promising as well.
