On this day 38 years ago, Mark and Laura Whitney ran memorable races in the New York State Federation Cross Country Championships.
Unlike the State Championship races, which are broken up by class among schools competing in the New York public school leagues, the Federation Championships include runners from the Catholic and private school leagues, as well as New York City schools, across all classes. This race determines who the best of the best is in New York every year.
Laura, just a 13-year-old eighth-grader took 1st place while Mark, a senior, took 3rd in a banner day for Stony Brook Athletics.
Laura would win the individual title again in 1979.
