On this day 54 years ago, the cross country team won a seventh straight Ivy League Championship.
The 1961 squad “was considered one of the strongest squads Stony Brook has ever produced,” according to Res Gestae 1962. Led by captain Bill Kennedy, Tom Ott, and John Kirchmeier, the team hustled to a 3-2 dual meet record, falling only to college freshman teams from Long Island Agricultural and West Point.
In the most important race of the season, the harriers secured another Ivy League crown as Kirchmeier became the latest in a long line of individual champions.
