On this day 39 years ago, the boys’ cross country team won a second consecutive Suffolk County Championship.
After finishing the dual meet season with a 4-1 record and a fourth straight League Championship, the Brookers turned their sights to Sunken Meadow State Park and its famed Cardiac Hill. In the Class B/C Championship the Shrikes claimed 1st place in a field of 10 teams as Mark Whitney repeated as the individual County Champion. His brother Andy took 3rd place while fellow All-Conference selection, Henry Ho, and All-League selections Bill Hobbs and Jim Hansen rounded out the scoring for the Brook.
One week later the team finished in 3rd place at the New York State meet, the squad’s highest finish in team history. The feat has only been equaled by the 2007 squad that finished 3rd in the Class D Championship. Mark Whitney was the runner-up while Andy finished in 18th place. Both would later become individual State Champions.
