The ’79 Shrikes

On this day 36 years ago, the boys’ cross country team finished the season undefeated to earn an eighth League Championship in the 1970s.

Led by Ray Camano, John Evans, Maurice Fiol, and Simon Tung, who were all within 30 seconds of each other, the team raced to a 5-0 league record, a Conference Championship, and a spot in the Suffolk County finals.

The ’79 season wrapped up a dominant decade for the Shrikes in which they won eight League Titles (four in undefeated fashion), a County Championship, and compiled a 64-9 meet record. The 64 wins in a single decade remains a team record.
