On this day 55 years ago, Stony Brook Hall of Famer Frank Visted ’57 made a key play in helping the Naval Academy top Notre Dame in a thriller.

Trailing 14-7, the Fighting Irish faced a fourth down on the five-yard line. Visted knocked down George Haffner’s pass to help the Midshipmen triumph.

In his senior season, Visted was the team captain and helped secure the line for the fourth-ranked team in the country that started the season 7-0, including a 17-12 victory over Army in Yankee Stadium, finished 9-2, and earned a berth in the Orange Bowl where they lost a memorable game to the Missouri Tigers.

His play merited a selection to the Senior Bowl as well as the All-America 2nd Team. That summer he was selected as part of a college all-star team that faced the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier’s Field in Chicago.
