Bears Clip Knights in Holy War Thriller

October 8, 2015

The boys’ soccer team is back in the playoff hunt.

Two weeks ago the Bears were sitting at the bottom of the league with an 0-3 record, including a loss to Smithtown Christian. Yesterday they earned some revenge against the Knights in a 1-0 victory that evened their record at 3-3. More importantly, it was a key win for the Bears’ playoff hopes who now need two more victories in their next four games to secure a postseason berth.

It was clear from the outset that the Brook knew what was at stake. The Blue and White offense incessantly attacked the Knights, stringing together a number of beautiful offensive possessions; but three struck crossbars, a glance off the post, and some deft saves by Smithtown’s keeper kept them off the board. Though they lost the possession battle in the first half, the Knights developed several scoring opportunities, two of which were snuffed out by impressive saves from David Choi. A hotly contested first half ended in a 0-0 tie.

In the second half, the Bears continued their offensive push, but several more impressive saves from the Knights’ netminder kept them at bay. As the tension of a tie game mounted, the physicality increased and several fouls were called on both sides. The stalemate was finally broken with 17:20 left in the game when Alvaro Martinez Torres scored his second game-winning goal in as many games. Mac Bohuny sent a beautiful free kick from midfield into the box where Martinez Torres touched the ball over the head of a defender and then volleyed it into the net, with the same foot, for the lone goal of the match.

From there the Bears held the lead thanks to great defense from Bohuny, Caleb Rudzitis, Bryant Kang, and Ben DiRuggiero.

The Bears next take the field when they host Port Jeff on October 14.
