After dominating League VI last season on their way to an undefeated League Championship, the girls’ tennis team was moved up to League V this season and a stiffer level of competition.

The Bears got their first glimpse of the playing field this afternoon in their season opener vs. Ward Melville. Though they fell to a talented and deep Patriots team, 6-1, the girls showed toughness, battling back in nearly every match after initially being put on their heels. Olivia and Julia Braat showed impressive resolve, absorbing an early blow from a Patriots’ doubles tandem, then landing a few of their own. Melinda Chen and Marta Bennett were also steadfast in their individual singles matches.

The fight the Bears showed today was best epitomized by one of the youngest members of the team: 8th grader Sadhana Sridhar. After dropping the first set of her first singles match, during which she was undone by a number of unforced errors, she righted the ship and battled back to win the second set, 6-3. When she broke her opponent’s serve in the first game of the third set, she appeared to have thoroughly wrested control of the match. Her lead grew to 5-2 in the third set before she wrapped it up with a strong final service game, taking the match 6-4. Sridhar employed her powerful forehand to continually keep her opponent on the run and used her instincts and gorgeous touch to run down difficult return shots along the baseline and extend points. At times she was nothing short of masterful. It will be a thrill to watch her continue to develop as a player this season and for years to come.

The girls will next travel to Bayport-Blue Point on Sept. 8th for a showdown with the Phantoms at 4:30pm.
