The name “Stony Brook” has become synonymous with success in Long Island girls’ soccer. Six Suffolk County Championships in seven years will help you garner that kind of reputation; but the Bears were not always vying for postseason titles. In fact, the girls’ program struggled for much of their early history, winning just 40 games in their first decade of existence.

However, the Bears experienced a sharp upswing in success in 2007, a year in which they won the program’s first Suffolk County and Long Island Championships. A year later they would add a Regional Championship to their trophy case and the school’s first team State Championships a year after that. From 2007 to 2013 the Bears built an incredible dynasty, winning six Suffolk County Championships, three Long Island Championships, two Regional Championships, and a State Title. Under the leadership of the program’s longest tenured and winningest coach, Mark Maningo, the Stony Brook girls’ soccer program has built a tradition of excellence where success is no longer hoped for, but expected.
