On this day 64 years ago, the mile relay team won the second Penn Relays plaque in school history, demolishing the other nine teams in the field by twenty yards.

Dave Gillispie led off, then handed the baton to Johnny Walker who passed three other runners to take over first place. Charlie Cowan extended the Brooker edge, then handed off to Roy Avers who continued to lengthen the lead before crossing the tape in 3:43.

It was Stony Brook’s second victory in three years as the squad of Bruce Dodd, Kendall Haff, Larry Burnell, and Robert Evers won the Blue and White’s first gold in 1949. The school’s plaque tally is currently eight with additional wins in 1958, 1960, 1965, 1977, 1993, and 2004.
