A late spring snowstorm could not dampen the excitement surrounding the 2nd Annual Alumni Basketball Weekend last Saturday. 23 alumni representing 12 different classes returned for a day full of reunion and competition.

The first event of the day was the Hot Shot competition. The goal of each 3-player team was to hit shots from four different locations–outside the paint, just inside the top of the key, 3-point territory, and half court–in as little time as possible. There was plenty of drama in the opening round as the top two teams were separated by just 0.26 seconds as the team of Mike Hickey ’05, Lou Pizzichillo ’08, and Danielle Spiliotis ’09 edged Fabrice Gaillard ’08, Dave Marvin ’99, and Adam Duff ’07, 38.42 to 38.16. In the finals, the Gaillard, Marvin, Duff trio could not have felt good about the 1:10 they earned, but pressure can do funny things. Hickey, Pizzichillo, and Spiliotis ripped through their first three shots in roughly 10 seconds, but as the misses piled up from half court, so too did the tension. They had a number of good looks that hit off the back iron but couldn’t come up with the big shot as Team Breezy took the title.

Next up was the 2nd Annual 3-Point Contest. Though last year’s champion, Ed Rooney ’04, was not in the building, there were plenty of shooters who lit up the scoreboard. Adam Duff drained a clutch, two-point money ball on his final shot, giving him 12 points and the early lead. Not to be outdone, Eric Duff ’08 followed with the best individual round in Alumni Basketball Weekend history, posting a scorching 19 out of 25 possible points after connecting on all five money balls. Spiliotis (14 points) and head coach Mike Hickey (16 points) rounded out the final four. In the finals Spiliotis put on a show, sinking 9 of her final 10 shots to finish with 18 points, giving her the victory.

Three full-length games followed featuring the “Legends” (Class of ’08 and older) and the “Young Guns” (Class of ’09 and younger), as well as the All-Star game which took the top performers from each of the four teams. In the Legends game the Bears raced out to an early lead behind the play of Pizzichillo, but the Shrikes mounted a comeback in the third quarter behind the hot shooting of Marvin, Josh Shteierman ’01, and coach Hickey. In the end it was not enough as Adam Duff, Gaillard, and Ryan Mitchell ’07 came up with big plays down the stretch to close out the win.

Between the games a ceremony was held, honoring the championship teams of the past from both the men’s and women’s programs. There were more representatives in attendance from the men’s side and it was a special moment seeing some two dozen players and coaches, representing ten championship teams and spanning 41 years, stand in front of the crowd to be recognized. It was a reminder of the sustained success the basketball programs have enjoyed over the years.

The pace picked up in the Young Guns game that included two current college players in Richie Armand ’12 and Andrew Daniel ’14 and two future college players, Robbie Colarusso ’15 and Luke Meyer ’15. Behind the great inside play of Jovan George ’11 the Bears built an early cushion, but Daniel, Armand, and Marco Masakayan ’13 kept things close. The Bears proved too much in the second half as they buried the Shrikes under an avalanche of threes from Colarusso and Meyer.

The All-Star game was a thriller that featured an impressively high level of play. George was dominant in the early-going, scoring an and-1 on three consecutive possessions to give White the edge. Masakayan and Pizzichillo pulled Blue back into the lead, but the game remained close throughout. With Blue up by 3 with five seconds left, a free throw pushed the game out of reach as they topped White in a thriller, 86-82.

Thanks to all of the alums who came out for the festivities. We hope it was a memorable time for you and we hope to see you next year!
