Bears Eye Regional Championship

March 10, 2015

It has been 22 days since our boys’ basketball team defeated Pierson in the Suffolk County Championship.

A long 22 days.

The Bears, currently ranked 13th in New York State, have been practicing for three weeks with one goal in mind: win the Regional Championship. Twice before, in 2010 and 2013, the boys narrowly missed winning this same game, coming just five points short of #1 ranked Pine Plains in 2013. The 2015 Bears are hoping to be the first to get over the mountain and be the first to make it into the State Final Four. Awaiting them is Haldane (Section I), the 9th-ranked team in New York, who topped #20 Chester (Section IX) in the other half of the Regional Semifinal.

In a tune-up for the Championship, the Bears scrimmaged Bridgehampton yesterday. The Bees walked into Swanson as the owners of a 20-2 record and the top rank in New York State’s Class D. No cumulative score was recorded, but the boys won three of the four quarters and edged the Bees by a net total of nine. Coach Mike Hickey was very positive about his team’s performance, especially in light of their lengthy hiatus from competition.

The Bears will face the Blue Devils of Haldane this Friday night at 7:30pm at Suffolk Community College-Selden.
