In last night’s rematch with Shelter Island, the girls’ basketball team avenged their season opening loss to the Indians with a thrilling 27-24 win.

The Bears’ scored just 11 total points in the December 16th meeting, but held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter in last night’s game, thanks to some early buckets from Hannah Abrahamsen. From there the game remained tight as both teams scored 5 points in the second period to give the Brook a 4-point halftime lead.

The Islanders edged the Bears in the third, 6-5, setting up a memorable fourth quarter. The Indians fought back to take a 24-23 lead with around five minutes left, but our girls came up with the stop they needed and later tied the game on a free throw. With the game knotted at 24 and 35 seconds left on the clock, the Bears came out of a timeout with a play designed for the 3-2 zone defense the Indians had been running. When the Indians instead came out in a 2-3 zone defense, Annie Skorobohaty, the primary option, was defended well. Skorobohaty improvised, racing to the top of the key to get the ball, cross over her defender, and sink her second 3-pointer of the night with just 16 seconds left to provide the winning margin for the blue and white.

Abrahamsen notched a  career-high 12 points while Skorobohaty and Sam Petersen added 6 points each.

The varsity girls faced a much-improved Stony Brook squad. Like the JV game, the score was close the entire way, with only 2 to 3 points separating the teams throughout the game. With 32 seconds left the score was tied 24-24, but a 3-point basket by the Bears in the last 15 seconds led to a 27-24 final score in Stony Brook’s favor.
