Dynamic Duo Blitzes Islanders

January 20, 2015

This afternoon the boys’ basketball team improved to 7-1 in League VIII play with a 71-57 win over Shelter Island. The iwn also ensured that the Bears will qualify for the Suffolk County playoffs for the 15th straight year. The final score made the game seem closer than it was as the Bears controlled every facet of the game, holding as much as a 24-point lead in the third quarter. Once again the catalysts were the backcourt duo of Robbie Colarusso and Luke Meyer who spearheaded the blue and white defense and tormented the Indians with their devastating offensive play.

The Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a layup and four free throws from Meyer. Two Shelter Island 3-pointers sandwiched a Colarusso trifecta to make the score 9-6, when the Brook ripped off a run that all but buried the Indians by the end of the quarter. The boys ripped off 14 straight points, using a smothering defense that stole the ball five times during the stretch. A 3-pointer from Colarusso, a layups from Meyer and Luke O’Connor, and two gorgeous jumpers from Chester Kayonga pushed the lead out. A Mac Bohuny trifecta closed the quarter, giving the Bears a commanding 26-9 lead after the first.

The Brook continued to roll in the second frame. Jyles Etienne opened with a score, then followed that up with a huge block. On the next possession Meyer shredded his defender with a crossover and took it all the way to the cup for a beautiful score. The Indians got hot in the second frame, connecting on three old fashioned 3-point plays and two 3-pointers, but the Bears were still able to push the lead with excellent execution on offense to take a 46-27 edge into the break.

Early in the third quarter the Bears pushed the lead to 24 points after a Colarusso score and foul. From there the blue and white cruised to their third straight win. With the win coach Mike Hickey’s all-time record against Shelter Island improves to 43-6. The Bears have not lost to the Indians since 1993.

Meyer finished with 22 points to go along with 4 steals and 4 assists. Colarusso scored 18 while adding 4 steals. Etienne added 7, Bohuny 6, Kayonga 6, Brandon Providence 5, Hunter Skorobohaty 4, and O’Connor 3 to go along with a monster block.

The boys next take the court Friday night at Greenport.
