On this day 33 years ago, Laura Whitney placed 13th in the Kinney National Cross County Championships held in Orlando, FL, helping the northeast win the girls’ team championship. She also bettered her finish from the previous year by three spots. Laura scorched the 3.1-mile course in 17:33 saying, “It was my best time yet. The flatness of the course helped.” She was the only New Yorker to qualify for the race that included the top 32 runners in America.

It was the crescendo of a career that included four State Championships, three Federation Championships, five Conference Championships, five County Championships, and four selections as an All-American. Additionally, Laura was an All-American in the two-mile run on the track.
